Minutes to Midnight (For Chester of Linkin Park)

So years ago I wrote this fanfiction like story that took place in the World of Warcraft, but almost all of the dialogue was lyrics from the album Minutes to Midnight by Linkin Park. After recent news of Chester Bennington’s passing, I wanted to post it here. Rest in peace Chester.

Part 1: Wake

Ragnosk, a Blood Elf priest, running through the entry way of an Alliance castle. He is being chased my many Alliance Humans in full armour. But he is only after the leader of the castle. He busted through the door leading to the throne room where he sees the human leader sitting with many guards around him.  Ragnosk blasts Penance at the leader but it just bounces off a shield like bubble around him. He stands up, with an angry look, and signals guards to seize Ragnosk.

Part 2: Given Up

Ragnosk, now held by both arms, was staring up at the guard. He thinks of the situation he is in, and how stupid he was to come alone. He remembers his secret weapon as the leader approaches him. Ragnosk thinks, -Stuck in my head again, feels like I’ll never leave this place, there’s no escape….I’m my own worst enemy…- Suddenly the guards get knocked back by a large shadowy blast as Ragnosk yells,

“I’ve given up!”
The leader moves back slightly to see Ragnosk enveloped in shadows. Ragnosk felt almost as if he watched his own self from a different perspective. This happened when he let his shadowform take over. “I’m sick of feeling.” Ragnosk said to the shadowform.
The shadowform ignored his inner voice and yelled at the leader, “Is there nothing you can say?!” Ragnosk sighed and told the shadowform, “Take this all away. I’m suffocating!”
The shadowform smiled and held his staff at the ready as he pointed it at the leader. “Tell me what the fuck is wrong with me!” The shadowform yelled with a crazy smile on his face.
Ragnosk could only watch as he knew the shadowform only liked to do things with violence. Not much the priest way, but it still got the job done. -I don’t know what to take,- Ragnosk thought as the shadowform started to mindspike and devour the very essence of the people around him, -Thought I was focused but I’m scared…I’m not prepared!-
Ragnosk started to look around and started to see only white. The image of what his own shadowform was doing had become a blur. -I hyperventilate…- Ragnosk thought while staggering in the vast white blur. -Looking for help somehow somewhere and no one cares….I am my own worst enemy.-
The shadowform was holding ready magic to blow away the Alliance leader’s mind. Ragnosk could feel like he had done wrong by letting this happen. He could only think -Put me out of my misery…Put me out of my misery…-
The shadowform started to say the same almost as he reached his magic closer to the leader head and said, “Put me out of my fucking misery!

Part 3: Leave out the Rest

Ragnosk awoke in a cell, from a strange nightmare. Human made cell. It seems he was able to spare the leader after all. He heard a noise from the cell door. It was someone he knew. A female blood elf. Her name couldn’t quite reach his mind, because he remembered his dream. He quickly moved over to the front of the cell and said,

“I dreamed I was missing…you were so scared,”
She smiled as she reached her hand across the bars and grabbed his. “But no one would listen, ’cause no one else cared,” he continued, “After my dreaming, I woke with this fear, what am I leaving when I’m done here?”

She had a worried look on her face. Ragnosk knew she was thinking about home in Eversong. She was about to speak but he already knew what her words would be so he said,
“So if you’re asking me, I want you to know…When my time comes forget the wrong that I’ve done. Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed…And don’t resent me, and when you’re feeling empty keep me in your memory…Leave out all the rest, leave out all the rest.”

She began to look around to make sure no more guards would be coming, with her worried expression. Ragnosk said, “Don’t be afraid, I’ve taken my beating. I’ve shared what I’ve made.” Ragnosk smirked and then continued,

“I’m strong on the surface, not all the way through. I’ve never been perfect, but neither have you.”

She smiled as she saw how they were both equal in some ways. She was a rogue: stealing, sneaking, and such. “Forgetting all the hurt inside, you’ve learned to hide so well. Pretending someone else can come and save me from myself,” Ragnosk said as they both heard a guard coming. She had to run, but she gestured toward the lock of the cell. She disappeared. Ragnosk stood alone and calmly said, “I can’t be who you are…I can’t be who you are…”

Part 4: Bleed It Out

Ragnosk heard the guard come closer down the hall and he also began to hear a familiar voice, followed by a gun shot. “Yeah here we go for the hundredth time, hand grenade pins in every line!”

It was Doomshlang, the Blood Elf Hunter. His giant Dragonhawk, Jaywing, pushed the guard against the wall and Doomshlang held his rifle to the guards face. Doom then said, “Throw ’em up and let something shine!”
He then looked over to Ragnosk and said while in a joking manner, “Going out of my fucking mind!”

He shot the guard and then grabbed the keys. He shuffled through the keys and remembered how Ragnosk is a priest and said, “Filthy mouth, no excuse.”
Ragnosk smiled and laughed. Doom had always been there to help Ragnosk out of tricky situations. He always mentioned the cells as any sort of death. Doom didn’t fail when he said, “Find a new place to hang this noose!” Doom gestured toward the cell.

“String me up from atop these roofs; Knot it tight so I won’t get loose!” Doom joked.

He would constantly mention how Ragnosk would get into these situations and he would not. Ragnosk was sure he would’ve come this time though. As they ran the way that Doom had come in, Doom started to explain his skills of rescuing Ragnosk,
“Truth is you can stop and stare, run myself out and no one cares. Dug the trench out laid down there with a shovel up out of reach somewhere. Yeah, someone pour it in, make it a dirt dance floor again.”

Doomshlang stopped as he noticed a group of guards spotted them.

“Say your prayers and stomp it out, when they bring that chorus in!”
Ragnosk readied his staff and Doom sent Jaywing forth at the guards. Ragnosk casted healing spells on both Doom and his pet. Ragnosk would only get hit once and awhile, but each time he thought, -I bleed it out digging deeper just to throw it away…- Ragnosk thought this as when he would be hurt, it led more to his dark side. Continually thinking,
-I bleed it out digging deeper just to throw it away. I bleed it out digging deeper just to throw it away…Just to throw it away…Just to throw it away.-

Ragnosk mumbled “I bleed it out.” Doomshlang continued his joking, as he would, when he killed more and more Alliance,
“Go stop the show! Choppy words and a sloppy flow. Shotgun opera lock and load! Cock it back and then watch it go!”
Doom then laughed as he quoted what he thought the guards were thinking running into Horde in their castle,  “Mama help me I’ve been cursed! Death is rolling in every verse! Candy paint on his brand new hearse. Can’t contain him he knows he works! Fuck this hurts, I won’t lie! Doesn’t matter how hard I try!”

Doom had then gotten serious as he said,

“Half the words don’t mean a thing and I know that I won’t be satisfied. So why try ignoring him? Make it a dirt dance floor again.”

Ragnosk casted Penance on Doomshlang, activating a magic bubble on Doom. Ragnosk then was hit by a guard’s stray magic blast. Ragnosk smirked and yelled, “I’ve opened up these scars! I’ll make you face this!!! I’ve pulled myself so far…I’ll make you, face, this, now!!!!” All Ragnosk could hear as his vision blurred was his thoughts trailing him.

I bleed it out.

I bleed it out.

I bleed it out…

Part 5: Shadow of the Day

Ragnosk opened his eyes to see himself at his house in Eversong Woods, as if Ragnosk was watching his ownself, not the shadowform. He thought of the things he was doing.-I close both locks below the window. I close both blinds and turn away.- He read his lips, “Sometimes solutions aren’t so simple…Sometimes goodbye’s the only way.”
Ragnosk wasn’t exactly sure what was going on. He just thought if he could only say something to himself. He would say,

“And the sun will set for you…The sun will set for you…And the shadow of the day will embrace the world in grey..And the sun will set for you…”

Ragnosk’s vision blurred to another area of his house. He was now watching himself in his female friend’s room. He read his lips again, “In cards and flowers on your window, your friends all plead for you to stay…”
Ragnosk thought to himself, -Sometimes beginnings aren’t so simple. Sometimes goodbye’s the only way.-The sun began to set.

Part 6: What I’ve Done

Ragnosk was now himself in his house. He wasn’t sure what had happened back at the castle after he let his shadowform take over. He noticed a note from his female rogue friend. He picked it up and read it. After reading it he said,

“In this farewell…There’s no blood, there’s no alibi. ‘Cause I’ve drawn regret from the truth of a thousand lies.” Ragnosk set the note down and looked to the bright sun. He yelled out, “So let mercy come, and wash away what I’ve done!”

Ragnosk moved over to a standing mirror. He said,

“I’ll face myself! To cross out what I’ve become. Erase myself, and let go of what I’ve done!”

Ragnosk then looked at the note.

“Put to rest what you thought of me, while I clean this slate with the hands of uncertainty.” Ragnosk wishes she was here to hear him. He thought, -What I’ve done…Forgiving what I’ve done…-

Part 7: Hands Held High

Ragnosk walked into Silvermoon City and saw Doomshlang standing with a large crowd infront of him. He stood upon a stage and he said,

“Turn my mic up louder I got to say something. Light weights step to the side when we come in. Feel it in your chest the syllables get pumping, people on the street they panic and start running. Words on loose leaf sheet complete coming. I jump in my mind and summon the rhyme, I’m dumping.”

He was gathering people’s attention to the cause of the Alliance threat upon the Horde while Garrosh led it. He continued,

“Healing the blind I promise to let the sun in. Sick of the dark ways, we march to the drum and jump when they tell us that they wanna see jumping. Fuck that! I wanna see some fists pumping. Risk something, take back what’s yours! Say something that you know they might attack you for! Cause I’m sick of being treated like I have before, like it’s stupid standing for what I’m standing for. Like this war’s really just a different brand of war. Like it doesn’t cater the rich and abandon poor. Like they understand you in the back of the jet, when you can’t put gas in your tank, these fuckers are laughing their way to the bank and cashing the cheque, asking you to have compassion and have some respect, for a leader so nervous in an obvious way,”
Doom said as he pointed to a poster of Garrosh,

“Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay. And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day in their living room laughing like “what did he say?””

The crowd was full of many “Amen.” Doom continued, “In my living room watching but I am not laughing, Cause when it gets tense I know what might happen. World is cold the bold men take action, have to react or get blown into fractions. Ten years old it’s something to see, Another kid my age drugged under a jeep, taken and bound and found later under a tree. I wonder if he had thought “the next one could be me?” Do you see the soldiers they’re out today? They brush the dust from bullet proof vests away. It’s ironic at times like this you pray But a bomb blew the mosque up yesterday. There’s bombs in the buses, bikes, roads Inside your market, your shops, your clothes. My dad he’s got a lot of fear I know, but enough pride inside not to let that show. My brother had a book he would hold with pride, a little red cover with a broken spine. On the back, he hand-wrote a quote inside When the rich wage war it’s the poor who die. Meanwhile, the leader just talks away. Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay and the rest of the world watching at the end of the day both scared and angry like “what did he say?””

Ragnosk looked up to the sky and started to say repeating, “With hands held high into the sky so blue, as the ocean opens up to swallow you.”

Part 8: No More Sorrow

Ragnosk traveled to Orgrimmar. He wsa thinking about Doom’s words. He knew he had to take it to Garrosh, the orc leader and leader of the Horde. He stormed into the main room of Garrosh’s throne. Guards tried to stop him because Garrosh was busy.

“Are you lost in your lies?! Do you tell yourself I don’t realize your crusade’s a disguise? Replace freedom with fear, you trade money for lives! I’m aware of what you’ve done!”

Ragnosk paced back and forth infront of the throne as Garrosh watched him. His expression seemed like he didn’t care what a blood elf thought. Doomshlang made Ragnosk realize that Garrosh had been letting some of these Alliance problem happen. Ragnosk was fooled to think that the leader he went after was a source of the problem.
“No! No more sorrow. I’ve paid for your mistakes! Your time is borrowed, your time has come to be replaced!”
Ragnosk’s words were almost treason against the Horde. Garrosh stood up quickly. Ragnosk continued,
“I see pain, I see need, I see liars and thieves. Abuse power with greed!”

Ragnosk shook his head and said,

“I had hope. I believed.” Ragnosk thought about the hope that Thrall stepping down was all bad, “But I’m beginning to think that I’ve been deceived. You will pay for what you’ve done!”

Orc guards ran to grab Ragnosk. He yelled,
“Thieves and hypocrites! Thieves and hypocrites! Thieves and hypocrites!”

Ragnosk’s shadowform was calling out to him. He felt his shadowform yelling, “Your time has come to be replaced. Your time has come to be erased!

Part 9: Valentine’s Day

Ragnosk thought of that moment. He thought,

-My insides all turned to ash, so slow, and blew away as I collapsed, so cold…A black wind took them away, from sight, and held the darkness over day, that night.-

His mind was lost of what happened when he was grabbed by the guards. Ragnosk looked up to the clouds, as he realized he was laying on the ground outside Orgrimmar.”And the clouds above move closer, looking so dissatisfied. But the heartless wind kept blowing, blowing.”
Ragnosk sighed as he thought of how he couldn’t escape his shadowform.

“I used to be my own protection, but not now…Cause my path had lost direction, somehow. A black wind took you away, from sight. And held the darkness over day, that night.”

Looking back to the clouds and thinking of what could be about his friend, he said,
“And the clouds above move closer, looking so dissatisfied. And the ground below grew colder, as they put you down inside. But the heartless wind kept blowing, blowing…”

He sat up. “So now you’re gone, and I was wrong I never knew what it was like, to be alone…On a valentine’s day.”

Part 10: In Between

Doomshlang walked over and sat down. He said,

“Let me apologize to begin with. Let me apologize for what I’m about to say. But trying to be genuine was harder than it seemed, and somehow I got caught up in between.”

Ragnosk looked over to him. Doom was talking about how he had got them both stuck in a position of trying to actually stand up for what’s right. Doom continued saying,
“Let me apologize to begin with. Let me apologize for what I’m about to say. But trying to be someone else was harder than it seemed, and somehow I got caught up in between.”

They both looked to the sky and said,
“Between my pride and my promise…Between my lies and how the truth gets in the way. And things I want to say to you get lost before they come. The only thing that’s worse than one is none.”

Ragnosk thought of his friend and how he wondered where she was and if he could say anything to her if he did see her. Doom was thinking about standing up and speaking to the leaders of what he thought. Ragnosk thought of the words he may say to her, -Let me apologize to begin with. Let me apologize for what I’m about to say, but trying to regain your trust was harder than it seemed, and somehow I got caught up in between.-

Doom then nudged Ragnosk and said “And I cannot explain to you, and anything I say or do or plan. Fear is not afraid of you, but guilt’s a language you can understand. I cannot explain to you, and anything I say or do. I hope the actions speak the words they can.”

Ragnosk nodded and his mind seemed to drift along with the words they both had said.

The only thing that’s worse than one is none.

The only thing that’s worse than one is none.

The only thing that’s worse than one is none…

Part 11: In Pieces

Ragnosk traveled back to Eversong. He reached his house and discovered his friend there. She stared at him. She knew all he had been through and done. More shadowform incidents. He thought of what she may say to him. Ragnosk decided to say,

“Telling me to go, but hands beg me to stay,”
He looked at her and she continued to stare. He examined her face and said,

“Your lips say that you love…Your eyes say that you hate. There’s truth in your lies, doubt in your faith. What you build, you lay to waste.”

Ragnosk thought of how they were never as perfect as he thought they were. He said,

“This truth in your lies, doubt in your faith. All I’ve got’s what you didn’t take. So I, I won’t be the oneBe the one to leave this in pieces! And you, you will be alone. Alone with all your secrets, and regrets. Don’t lie.”

Ragnosk almost felt bad for saying that. He didn’t want her to be alone, but then a part of him did. He continued with, “You promise me the sky, then toss me like a stone. You wrap me in your arms, and chill me to the bone. There’s truth in your lies, doubt in your faith. All I’ve got’s what you didn’t take.”

He tried to pull back words.

Don’t lie.

Part 12: The Little Things Give You Away

Ragnosk sat on his roof as it started to rain. He and Doom had been sitting for quite a while now. Ragnosk watched as the rain started to run through his house, but he didn’t care. He just said,

“Water grey…Through the windows, up the stairs. Chilling rain…Like an ocean everywhere.”
He looked out to where his friend had left. He didn’t mean his harsh words. Most of his doing was his own fault, and to no help of the shadowform. Ragnosk continued,

“Don’t want to reach for me, do you? I mean nothing to you…the little things give you away…And now there will be no mistaking, the levees are breaking.”

He thought to himself, to his shadowform,

-All you’ve ever wanted was someone to truly look up to you, And six feet under water I do…-    Ragnosk ran his hand through his spikey hair and said, “Hope decays. Generations disappear. Washed away, as a nation simply stares.”

Ragnosk and Doomshlang sat there staring into the rain feeling like they didn’t accomplish anything. As the noise of the rain overtook the sound all around, Ragnosk could hear Doom say,

Little things give you away,

Little things give you away,

Little things give you away,

Little things give you away,

Little things give you away…

“Think It, Write It, Panic, Publish” Writing Panel at Sabaku Con 2017

So I got back from a weekend in Albuquerque New Mexico, where I and some friends went to Sabaku Con. Sabaku Con is an anime convention that has been happening every year for the last 5 years.

This year, I submitted a writing panel on general knowledge about writing and publishing. It was labeled an entertainment panel, because the con is mostly anime based. To my surprise, almost the entire room was filled with people interested in hearing about writing.

A few more people came in after I took these photos, so there was quite a turn out! I’m extremely thankful for those who came and participated in open discussion. The discussions went so well that we didn’t get to fully go over all the slides we had for our presentation!

So here’s the slides I used, for those who want to know more.

Writing Panel at Sabaku Con!

My writing panel got approved for Sabaku Con 2017! My panel “Think It, Write It, Panic, Publish” is to help anyone who wants insight on the writing world!

Description: Ever think about pursuing writing as a career or a hobby? Don’t know where to start? This panel can give you the insight from the experiences of a self-published author on the world of writing novels, fan-fiction, poems, short stories. and publishing.

Anyone who is in the Albuquerque area, and attending Sabaku Con, is welcomed to come. I’ll be joined by my writing friend Asiera (you can check more about her here)! She has some unique insight into writing that I don’t so it’ll help.

The panel will be informative by the information Asiera and I provide, probably with a PowerPoint slideshow showing our experience as writers. I want it to be open to questions anyone has, because I’m sure everything can’t be answered in slides.

To attend the panel, you have to be attending the convention, so here’s a link to the membership passes: http://www.sabakucon.com/memberships/index.html. The convention is being held at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North.

Hope to see some people there!

A Trip Through Virtual Reality

So for anyone who knows me as the being I am, they should know that I am a writer and a gamer. I started gaming way before I started writing, but that isn’t by a huge gap. I started writing short stories about LEGO’s Bionicles in kindergarten, and had been playing video games since I was old enough to understand what was going on.

So as my 5th novel is being edited, I’ve been tossing around the ideas of the next story I will write. I was going to possibly write a story based in the TRON universe by Disney, but with recent rumors of Disney rebooting the series, I didn’t want to risk the investment. Writing a story like that could only be published by Disney Hyperion, so making it a possibly outdated story canon-wise just makes it harder.

So I’ve been tossing around the idea of writing the concept/genre of people getting stuck in video games. Several authors have done it already. Some off the top of my head are Andrew Klavan’s MindWar trilogy and John David Anderson’s Insert Coin to ContinueThough writing for different age groups, I believe this is a popular subject matter. Things like Sword Art Online wouldn’t be as popular if it wasn’t. One of my favorite series growing up was .Hack GU, where a virus in the game was causing people in real life to enter into comas. The main character, Haseo, was super cool! af212a1140143d5eafb35ebaf3200f2c0668cc7c_hq

As a gamer, I thought, what better thing to write about? Mixing fantasy and gaming, and the countless hours I’ve spent watching YouTubers game, I think I could create a pretty cool story.

Virtual Reality (or VR for short) is the hot thing right now in video games, and it might seem cliche, but it might be a great use of the bridge between the concepts of reality and gaming.  I can’t afford to buy a VR headset to test it out in person, but I have watched many let’s players on YouTube test it out. (That’s research right?).

A side note, as a gamer and fan of Disney, they are surely missing out not making the Grid Games a VR game. Just saying. discanim1

Might be writing a couple more blogs on the idea of gaming meeting writing. Figured it could be a good way to get ideas flowing for stories. It might even help some other writers out there!

Any gamers out there like to read about this concept? Or any writers currently writing this? I’d like to know how it’s going! Let me know in the comments! I’d love to know what kind of games inspire anyone out there, or even games you just like to play.

Author Update

“And when he swore to bring back his love by the stories he’d create, nightmares shifted endlessly in the darkness of the lake.” – The Poet and the Muse by Poets of the Fall

So I haven’t written a piece in a while, so I figured I’d take the time to update everyone on how my writing is going.

Last I wrote a blog, I was doing NaNoWriMo 2016. Well, I won for the second year in a row, which just means I met the 50,000 word count within a month. It pumped out a lot of my current story. Congrats to anyone else who won National Novel Writing Month too!

nanowrimo_2016_webbanner_winner_congrats

Since, I haven’t written too much. Shortly after NaNo, the holidays came in a storm. It kept me pretty busy. Traveled to see some family in another state. I did take my laptop but never really got a lot of free time to sit down and write what I wanted. It was nice to spend time with family I don’t really get to see much.

Once I got back, I was planning on writing while I still had a few days before I had to go back to work. But alas, the Steam Winter Sale was going on. If anyone knows me well enough, they know I’m also a gamer. I picked up several new games and played Stardew Valley for several hours on those last few vacation days. Praise to Gaben.

steam-summer-sale

So here I am almost half way through January, and the ending still needs to be written to my current manuscript. On the plus side, I’ve been taking creative writing classes and several critiques have said that the beginning of the story is brilliant. That’s always a nice feeling.

Hopefully I’ll finish the ending soon and get into the grind that is called editing. I have an outline of several scenes that need to be revised and edited already. Don’t know how long the editing and revision stage will take, because I hope not too long before I can start looking for an agent.

I’ll probably give another update when I reach the editing stage, but until then, thanks for reading. I should get back to writing now.

Cloudy Days

Today is overcast. I love cloudy days. oddly enough, I feel energized during them. Not a huge fan of the hot sunny days.

It’s the cloudy days that remind me how much I love to write. I don’t know about other writers, but cloudy days are the best days for me to write on. Something about the possible drizzle, or flurry, that inspires me. There’s a gray tone to everything.

I may not be writing as a career yet, but days like this that inspire me, I can only smile with the idea of reaching that goal someday.

It’s only two days after NaNo, where I finished my 5th manuscript. This is a new beginning for me. My first four were a series I self-published due to my impatience. With this 5th one, it can stand on its own and hopefully help me become the full time author I want to be.

NaNo Struggles

So I’ve been writing my 5th novel during this year’s National Novel Writing Month. The goal for NaNoWriMo, NaNo for short, is to write 50,000 words in 30 days. That comes out to 1667 per day.

I wrote my entire 4th novel in one month during the 2015 NaNo. It’s a long and hard process of learning to get a routine, trying to squeeze words into any free time you get. This year is no different.

I’m a student, I have a job, and I also have a hobby of playing video games, so writing time is far in few. I also like to read when I can, as every writer should.

I’m actually almost done with my 5th novel with this NaNo. There were a few times when I was able to write a lot in one sitting. There were few days, though, where it was hard to even write more than a sentence.

My advice to those writing, or perhaps planning on writing next year, is don’t get stressed about word count. Write whenever you can, even if it’s one word.

Take part in write-ins, local events to gather several NaNo writers to write together. The change in scenery helps. Plus you can meet some awesome people.

Find some writing music that connects with your novel and/or character(s). I can’t admit enough how much Alesana helped with my second novel, Elements of Blood. Last year for NaNo, it was mostly Owl City. This year, it’s been a mix of Poets of the Fall and Ninja Sex Party.

Take part in forums. NaNo has many that are for those who need inspiration and support to meet the word count.

Lastly, just keep writing. Even when I’m not writing, I’ve been thinking about what to write next. So even when I’m not at my keyboard, I’m support till processing and refining the next sections of my novel.

9 more days till NaNo is over, so I wish anyone participating good luck. To another writers and aspiring NaNoers, I hope to see you next year.

Writing in Video Games

So just yesterday, I beat the game Quantum Break. It’s a Remedy Entertainment video game that does great justice to the company. Playing through the game, I realized how important writing can be for a video game. I mean, I’ve always know that for a fact (especially as a writer myself), but Remedy does storytelling so well that it really opened my eyes.

I’ve always been a sucker for lore and story in video games. I’m the kind of gamer that will read the quest dialogue in World of Warcraft, and even read the physical books based on the game. WoW is one of my favorite video games to have lore in it. I am completely enTHRALLed with the backstory of the races and the characters. It’s one of the reasons I would love to be an intern writer at Blizzard Entertainment (the company that made WoW). Fingers crossed that may actually happen one day.

Anyways, back to Quantum Break. This game has a great story. Remedy has always been great at making story-driven games that also are fun to play, like Alan Wake or Max Payne. Story-driven games are games that are usually highly dependent on the story they tell. Well, I wouldn’t say highly dependent exactly. More like the game is more centered around the story. Games like these are always catching my interest. As a writer and author, I want a compelling story. I want to be inspired. I want to feel what the characters feel.

Speaking of characters, Quantum Break nails them. There were characters that were (for the sake of giving spoilers) seemingly bad at the beginning, but then actually had redeeming qualities. There were characters I was rooting for, aside from the main character Jack Joyce, that faced just as many challenges.

One great thing about Quantum Break is that it entwines the video game aspect with TV show-like episodes at the end of each act. These episodes can change based on your decisions in the game. I wholeheartedly believe that these episodes really helped the gamer/watcher see the “behind the scenes.” From episode one, I was rooting for a character I thought was bad. At the end of episode four, I was nearly crying because of the connection the game gave me to the characters. Character development and connection are great aspects in a game.

I might be just a simple novelist and gamer, but I can always tell when the story in video games is done really well. If I feel the same thing characters feel emotionally, if I am at the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next, and if I still have a residual feeling after the game, the story and game were brilliant.

That residual feeling is something that makes me want to tell everyone to play the game for themselves. It’s something that needs to be experienced. Games like Quantum Break, or another favorite of mine, Life is Strange, should be played. So I highly recommend Quantum Break. Brilliant story, awesome characters, and the feels.

Fable lives on as a CCG

Fable has been one of my favourite video game series. Lionhead Studios has always held a special place in my heart. Sadly, on the 29th of April, Lionhead Studios officially closed.

Since, I have been on a journey of playing all the Fable games on Xbox 360 to attempt to 100% them achievement wise. Since then, I not only have rekindled my love for the series, I even got into reading the books and short stories.

It reminded me how much inspiration the Fable series had on my own fantasy novels.

As a gamer and an author, Fable will always be special to me. Even though Fable Legends, the last title Lionhead was working on before they closed, was cancelled, Fable still lives! On the 31st of March, a new independent studio formed by ex-Lionhead developers came to light. Named Flaming Fowl Studios, they keep Fable going with the new Fable title, Fable Fortune.

Fable Fortune is a CCG, or a collectible card game, similar to Magic the Gathering or Hearthstone. I recently got into Hearthstone and really enjoyed it, but now I’m excited for Fable Fortune.

You can support the game by pledging or even just sharing the Kickstarter here. You can also subscribe to Flaming Fowl Studios’s YouTube Channel, or like their Facebook and follow their Twitter.

If you’re a fan of the Fable series, or even just a fan of CCGs, then I highly suggest that you support this video game.

How to Self-Publish (with CreateSpace)

CreateSpace is my go to for my self-publishing needs. It was pretty easy to learn, but I figured I’d give any tips to those interested in CreateSpace. You can self-publish with CreateSpace for FREE as long as you keep your book to the basic options.

First, you’ll need to set up an account. Once you set up an account and log in, it should take you to the “Member Dashboard” where you can see all your titles and projects you’ve created in CreateSpace as well as there ID numbers and the royalties you’ve received.

dashboard

From here, you can click the “Add New Title” button. This will take you to the page where you can select what you are self-publishing, whether it be a book, CD, or DVD. As I am an author, and not creating CDs or DVDs, this will be general to creating paperback projects. You can see my 3 current books and the older editions of my first 2 listed here.

title

You have to name your project, most likely the book’s title, select the paperback option, and then select the guided process. There is an “expert” process that is in beta apparently, but if it’s your first time using CreateSpace, best to stick to the guided option.

title info

After it loads your new project, you’ll find yourself on the “Title Information” page under Setup for your project. Here you can add a subtitle (if you have one), the author’s name (in case you use a pen name), extra contributors (like designed by, photographs by, etc.), if the book is part of a series (which is optional), edition number, language, and finally the publication date. Each section has a “What’s This?” underneath it with more information regarding each one.

isbn

After you save and continue (after you save you can always come back to edit the project), you’ll find yourself on the ISBN page. Here you can get a free ISBN through CreateSpace or purchase a custom ISBN. You can also provide your own if you have bought one previously. There is a link to compare the ISBN options near the top.

For the next page, you’ll need your completed, edited, and formatted manuscript. I don’t have a picture for the next pages because I don’t have the required files/information to make the pages appear as they would for someone who is entering all the information in. The Interior page is where you choose the interior type (being black & white or full color), paper color (between white or cream), trim size (how large your pages and book will be), and where you submit your file. The color options are obviously going to probably cost you, I’m not actually sure, as I have only done black & white interior and white pages. There also is an option here for $199 for CreateSpace to professionally design your interior. This is NOT paying for them to EDIT. It’s to DESIGN your manuscript. Like I said before, you can get through this completely free if you know how to edit your document yourself.

Next is the cover! Here you can choose between having a glossy shiny cover, or a matte cover which is just a regular non-shiny cover. You can order samples to see what they look like but that’ll cost you. After you choose between the finish of your cover, you have three options: Build your own cover with CreateSpace’s limited cover designer, pay $399 dollars to have them design you a cover, or upload a cover-ready PDF. If you don’t have a full cover ready as a PDF, you can make your own for free. The designer is limited with fonts and templates, but it’ll get the job down if you just have like a photograph you want as your cover. If you have no picture editing skills, or can’t find someone who does, you should make your own cover with their designer. Or if you have 400 dollars. GIMP is an excellent program to use for photo editing. It’s like Photoshop but free, and pretty simple to use.

You did it! After all this you have come to the Complete Setup page. Here you review the information you have selected for your book. After everything is exactly as you want it, you submit your file(s) for review. It takes about 24 hours before they get back to you. During these 24 hours you can’t edit anything you have selected. This review is to see if your manuscript file and your cover file match up and there are no errors. If there are errors, you’ll have to fix them and resubmit and wait another 24 hours. If there isn’t any errors, then you are good to go. You can digitally proof your book (to see if there are any errors that it didn’t catch) or you can order a proof copy to read in person. You’ll have to wait if you order a copy, but if you proof it digitally, you can move on and begin the process of distributing your book.

The Distribute section is where you enter your price, your book description, what channels you want your book to be available to, and if you want to publish the book on Kindle. They are all self explanatory. To publish on Kindle, it’ll simply convert your files to eBook format and publish it that way as well. For pricing, there is a minimum price that you can set your book. Depending how long/big the book is, the higher the minimum price will be.

Hopefully this will help shed some light on the guided process of self-publishing a book through CreateSpace. There are several other self-publishing sites that you can use if CreateSpace isn’t your cup of tea, but it’s the only one I’ve used. Explore your options, but if you do decide on CreateSpace, hopefully this will help.

If you have any more questions on CreateSpace, feel free to ask me or even visit the forums.
